Mankato Chamber of Commerce Senior Spotlight: Alora Vandaveer

The Mankato, KS Chamber of Commerce took on the Senior Spotlight project for the 2017-2018 school year in an effort to encourage students to consider returning to Jewell County in the future and to ask important questions about how they think our communities could be improved. For our community to grow in the future, we need to listen to what our young people have to say. Please enjoy this week's Senior Spotlight Interview with Alora Vandaveer. Q: If your had the power to change anything, what would it be? A: If I had the power to change anything, it would be how we view the world and each other. For example, a lot of us are just mean to each other. We assume we know who the person is without trying to figure it out. I would change how we we one another and the world and how we treat each other. It would be a more peaceful place. Q: What is something that most people may not know about you? A: Something most people do not know about me is my past has dramatically shaped who I am as a person today. Everything in my past that hurt me, made me all the more stronger for living through it. My experiences have made me very determined to turn my life around and not let the past affect me any longer. Q: In terms of businesses (Service, retail, etc.) what do you believe is missing in Mankato that would benefit the people of Jewell County? A: A business I think would benefit Jewell County is a store such as Walmart. Kiers is a great sore and Dollar General make up for what Kiers does not provide, but having a more multipurpose store, I believe, would greatly benefit Jewell County, making things more accessible to us. Q:Where do you see yourself in ten years? A: I see myself with a family, working in a salon I started myself in Beloit, Kansas. I have always pictures myself as a mother with a loving family. I plan to live in Mankato and have my salon in Beloit. Q: What are some improvement you would like to see in Mankato in the future that would entice our youth to return? A: I plan to stay in Jewell County most of my life. I plan to do college courses online and start a business in Beloit, Kansas. I think Jewell County is a wonderful place to live and raise a family. Everyone know who everyone is and they are all friendly to one another. So ever though the question is what I would change, I don't think I would change a thing. Q: What is your favorite way to spend a Saturday? A: Saturday night I either like spending it with my friends and boyfriend or with my family. Usually a Saturday night is when I have a movie night just to relax, have some popcorn, and watch a movie with the people I love. Thank you for reading and taking the time to get to know Alora! Keep your eye out for this great student and take the time to introduce yourself and encourage her to pursue a future in Jewell County!
